Our Staff


     Dr Jay Gould is a graduate of Phillips Academy and Denison University. He received his DVM from Cornell University in 1976. He performed a rotating internship, 2 year medical residency and was a staff member for 2 years at the Animal Medical Center in NYC where he became a board certifed specialist in small animal internal medicine.  Following a few years in a private referral practice in Huntington, Long Island, Jay spend 8 years on the faculty at the vet school at Cornell where he taught small animal and exotic animal medicine and was a referral clinician in their Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.  He has been happily married to Susan since 1983. They fell in love with Mattapoisett and opened the hospital in 1994.  They live in Rochester with 3 dogs, 3 cats, a parakeet, a finch and a 40 year old femail turtle named Ralph.  Jay is an avid windsurfer, snowboarder and football fan.  He enjoys painting with water colors and some of his paintings decorate the hospital. 


     Dr Jill O'Brien is a 1991 graduate of the Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine. She enjoys small animal medicine and surgery as well as treating birds, reptiles and small mammals. She also has considerable expertise  as a veterinary acupuncturist.  Jill is married and has 3 children.  Her family also includes 10 cats, 2 dogs, 2 horses,  a guinea pig, 2 mice, 2 parakeets, 3 frogs, a gecko and 5 chickens.

     Dr Michael Raposo is a 2011 graduate from the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine.  He is a long time resident of Mattapoisett where he graduated from Old Rochester High School in 2003.  Mike knew he wanted to be a Veterinarian since being employed as a technician at the Mattpoisett Animal Hospital in 2001.  After vet school, Mike completed a rotating internship in internal medicine, surgery and emergency medicine at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.  He owns a 4 year old black lab mix named Jetty.  When enjoying time outside of the animal hospital, you can find him boating, fishing, working out at the gym and taking Jetty to the beach or for long hikes. 


     Susan Perry is the Office Manager and one of our Veterinary Technicians.  Susan attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and earned a bachelors degree in Animal Science.  After graduating in May of 1999, she began work at the Mattapoisett Animal Hospital.  She resides in New Bedford with her 6 year  old daughter Makenna.  Susan has a 9 year old golden retriever named Phoebe, and 3 cats, Poop, Wallee and Stitch.  Susan loves being with her friends and family and spending every spare moment with Makenna.


     Jenn Edwards grew up in Fairhaven with a love for animals. She was a client for 2 years prior to being asked to join us as a staff member. She has a specific fondness for cats and rabbits.  Jennifer lives in New Bedford with her husband Israel and their 4 year old son Ayden. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, and practicing drawing and photography in her spare time.


    Judy Swett has spent most of her career working in human pathology laboratories. Her pets were patients at the Mattapoisett Animal Hospital for years before she expressed an interest in joining our staff. She grew up in western Massachusetts and attended UMass/Amherst  where she attained her Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology.  Judy lives in Wareham with her husband, their Irish Setter and 4 cats.


     Naomi Correia graduated from Bristol County Agricultural High School where she studied Large Animal Science.    After graduating from high school, she always knew she wanted to work with animals.  Naomi plans on attending school for Veterinary Technology.  She has 3 horses and 2 dogs.   In her spare time, Naomi loves to take her horse Penny swimming and trail riding.   She also likes to go to the beach and play basketball.


     Joanne Nicholson graduated from the University  of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2003 with a  Bachelor's Degree in Biology.  After graduating,   Joanne worked for a biotech company and then    worked for a marine animal rehabilitation hospital where she was an educator and animal care technician. Joanne lives in Wareham with her husband Kyle and their 2 cats Casey and Trouble.  When she is not lounging with her cats, she enjoys hiking, camping and spending time with family and friends.


     Sara Cavallaro joined our team in February of 2011.  She has been a lifelong resident in Wareham.  She began volunteering at a local animal shelter at the age of 12  knowing that she would one day persue a career in animal care.  She graduated in 2007 from Wareham High School and has worked full time with animals ever since.  In her spare time, Sara loves reading, writing, shopping and traveling.    She also enjoys grooming animals and spending as much time as she can with her friends and family.  Due to her days at working in the shelter, she lives with many friends including an Irish Setter mix named Amber Rose, a Shih Tzu Princess Penny Pie, a Golden Retriever named Makayla and her cats Skittles, Milo and Mandy. 


     Chloe DeSousa has always had a passion for animals.  As a child she had an assortment of pets ranging from dogs, cats, horses to rabbits.  She has always known that working with animals in some way is where she would end up.  She has 3 years experience in the veterinary field.  When she is not at work, she is at her home in Rochester with her boyfriend Nate and her cats.  She enjoys reading, riding, horses and going to the beach. 


     Julio was a stray who was hit by a car in February of 2002.  After weeks of hospitalization, he made a tremendous recovery and  now is the unofficial greeter in the hospital.  In his spare time, Julio likes to chew plants, chase bugs and take naps on    the counters.  Julio enjoys playing with puppies until they  become too rough whereupon he torments them from tabletops.  You can find Julio lying around the hospital waiting for his   next friend to come walking through the door.

 


      Harry was also a stray who came to us in February of 2010.    He was very cold and malnurished and weighed only 4.5lbs.     After a few weeks of warmth, food and tons of love, he has   become a great addition to our hospital.  In his spare time, Harry loves to snuggle up to the warm laundry, chew plants and loves    to curl up on the scheduling book at the front desk.  



     Alice is an African Grey who joined our staff in April of 2010.  She has a unique love for men and an amazing  vocabulary that is very entertaining to anyone who walks through the door.  In her spare time, Alice loves to eat grapes, crunch on crackers and enjoys shredding paper. You can find Alice behind our front desk waiting to say "Goodbye" to  everyone that leaves.
